Native to the mountainous regions of central China, Cotoneaster dammeri 'Radicans' is a superb evergreen groundcover that offers exceptional year-round interest with its glossy foliage, delicate white early summer flowers, and bright red autumn berries. This prostrate shrub is a true joy in early spring; as the snow melts and leaves the rest of the garden looking brown and bare, this cotoneaster emerges fresh and vibrant green.
It spreads steadily to form a thick, weed-suppressing carpet. Unlike other sparse groundcovers that send out long, wispy runners, 'Radicans' advances via sturdy, woody stems that root slowly into the soil as they go. This makes its growth dense and easy to control with just a single annual trim if it oversteps its bounds. In our experience, this is an incredibly versatile plant that copes well in full sun or shade. It is a fantastic problem-solver for dry-shade areas where little else survives.
It can be used along path edges to soften hard lines, or as a living green carpet from which taller plants can dramatically emerge. Thanks to its ground-hugging habit, it stays safely protected beneath the winter snow blanket. While officially rated for zones I–II, it is well worth a try much further north.
