Native to Japan and South Korea, Polystichum polyblepharum is a robust, clump-forming fern that brings an immediate sense of lushness to shaded areas.
If you have ever gone on a walk after the rain, seen the plants looking glossy and shiny, and thought how gorgeous they look—that is exactly the effect this fern gives you all the time. Its uniquely polished, leathery fronds maintain a glossy shine, naturally brightening the darkest corners of the garden.
This species remains evergreen through most winters. Only a challenging combination of severe frost and a lack of snow cover on sunny, late-winter days can damage the foliage. Even if that happens, the plant will reliably flush again with a fresh set of fronds in early summer.
In woodland garden design, this sturdy, non-invasive fern serves as an excellent accent plant along shaded borders. Its highly glossy texture provides a very useful contrast, since most other shade plants, whether native or ornamental, have a matte finish.
