Native to North America and northeastern Asia, Hordeum jubatum is an ornamental grass that brings an airy feel to the garden. Commonly known as foxtail barley, this short-lived species self-seeds reliably to maintain a continuous presence year after year. It establishes quickly in full sun and copes effortlessly with drier soils.

What sets this grass apart is its silky flower heads featuring long, hair-like awns that catch the breeze. In southern Finland, flowering begins in mid-July and continues for a long season as the plant repeatedly produces fresh spikes. The delicate plumes start with a soft pinkish-green tint before aging into a light golden shade.

In terms of garden design, Hordeum jubatum brings natural movement and a soft texture to sunny borders. It works exceptionally well scattered among bolder perennials or planted in drifts where its feathery stems can sway freely.
