Native to the sandy soils and open woodlands of the southeastern United States, Amsonia ciliata is a long-lived, clump-forming herbaceous perennial. It forms a neat, dense, bush-like mound with narrow and regular leaves giving it an upright look.

In June, loose terminal clusters of soft, pale blue, star-shaped flowers emerge at the tips of the erect stems. As the growing season transitions into autumn, the finely textured foliage undergoes a dramatic color transformation, turning a brilliant, glowing golden-yellow that provides excellent late-season interest in the garden landscape.

Perfectly suited for climate zones I to III in Finland, this hardy perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade, where its sturdy stems remain upright without flopping. In a typical Finnish summer, it needs little attention even during establishment and only requires watering if it is hot and dry for a prolonged period.
Amsonia ciliata is highly drought-tolerant and will need little care other than cutting back the old stems once a year in spring.
