Native to the woodland regions of Europe, Luzula sylvatica 'Marginata' is an elegant, garden-worthy selection of the robust greater woodrush. What sets 'Marginata' apart is its narrow white leaf margins that illuminate shaded areas. Unlike many variegated cultivars that sacrifice vitality for aesthetics, this selection remains exceptionally vigorous and resilient. Sylvatica is a remarkably self-sufficient plant that establishes easily in challenging environments with minimal intervention.
Luzula sylvatica provides garden interest when it is most needed. In our zone Ib garden it stays evergreen all winter, though exposure to snowless spring sun may cause browning that is easily fixed by a cutback to spark fresh growth. Early in the season, ahead of most other grasses, delicate plumes emerge to provide interest before the foliage forms a dense, weed-suppressing mat.
In terms of garden design, sylvatica is best planted in bold groups to create a clean, lush effect along the front of a border or under trees and shrubs.
