Native to the mountainous woodland areas of Japan and eastern China, Kirengeshoma palmata is a shrub-like herbaceous perennial.

It features delicate, irregularly cut, maple-like leaves that account for most of its visual beauty throughout the growing season.

This plant flowers reliably in Finland during the early autumn with waxy, soft yellow, bell-shaped flowers that serve as a beautiful prelude to the changing colors of the trees.

The 'Black Style' variety is a European selection chosen specifically because its upright stems darken to a dramatic, nearly pure black-purple as the flowers emerge. This gives the variety a sharper, cleaner, and more graphic silhouette in the shade compared to the standard species.

It has proven to be reliably hardy for us here in South Finland for many years, making it an excellent, long-lived architectural choice for shaded borders and woodland beds. While it hates being dry—and the large leaves will wilt dramatically to tell you it needs water—the plant becomes very resilient once established. We have it planted in several places, including a challenging, dry, sloping shade area, and after providing supplemental watering for the first two years to help it fully stabilize, it can now happily fend for itself.
