Originating from Japan's Yakushima Island, Dryopteris koidzumiana is a robust selection of the most commonly available Dryopteris erythrosora. When happy, this clump-forming fern will grow fast and create a large specimen in a few seasons without being overly aggressive in its growth. It stands out as a well-behaved, non-invasive alternative to runners like Matteuccia struthiopteris.
What sets this selection apart is its exceptional russet red new fronds that mature into a soft, light green color. This plant remains reliably evergreen under the snow protection through the winter and early spring when the surrounding landscape is bare. It cleanly drops its old fronds in mid-May when the rest of the garden has greened up to naturally mask the change.
Due to its warm provenance, koidzumiana prefers warm summers and should be given a protected, sunnier position in Finland, provided it has enough moisture. Otherwise, it will take longer to re-awaken into growth, which can delay or even weaken its annual growth.
